Airth Castle

Hotel and Spa Resort

Airth Castle, located in the Falkirk area of Scotland, is today a listed building run as a luxury hotel. It has 125 guest rooms and suites with the amenities you'd expect, together with the usual bars and restaurants. It also has an on-site Leisure and Beauty Spa called Cloud Nine.

As well as short weekend breaks and surprise birthday parties the hotel caters for a huge range of special occasions including Easter, Christmas and New year Breaks, sporting breaks, weddings and - of course - ghost tour weekends.

History

Airth Castle dates back to the 14th century. It was occupied in 1309 by the Erth family. "Erth" comes from the Gaelic for "hill", "Ardhe", and eventually became "Airth".

The castle has associations with two of the most famous names in Scottish history: William Wallace and Robert the Bruce. William Wallace raided the castle once to rescue his uncle who was held there by the English and there is now a "Wallace Tower" named after him. In later years the Bruce family owned the castle, much of which was burnt down by James II of Scotland in revenge for the family's support for the rebel lords.

Ghosts

Like most ancient Scots castles, Airth has its share of ghosts and several rooms are said to be haunted. The most well known is probably that of a 17th century housekeeper. She is believed to have failed to look after two children who were in her care and who died tragically in a fire. She now stalks the castle trying hopelessly to find the children and atone for her mistake.

Other ghosts that have been reported include an unseen dog and a maid who screams at night.

In 2005 Ghost Finders Scotland made an investigation of Airth Castle. They detected unusual electromagnetic fluctuations and numerous light anomalies whilst the group's psychic medium sensed the presence of many spirits.
