The Learmonth Hotel
The Learmonth Hotel is popular with both tourists and business travellers visiting Edinburgh, providing as it does accomodation near to Princes Street in the heart of the city. It's also popular amongst those with a taste for the strange, the spooky and the supernatural because of its reputation for being haunted.
History
The Learmonth Hotel was built in the early 19th century and is part of a tree-lined terrace that typifies Edinburgh architecture of the time. It's situated about a mile from the West End region of Princes Street, within two miles of both Waverley and Haymarket train stations and within six miles of Edinburgh airport.Today the hotel is part of the Swallow Hotels group and has a two star rating. Facilities include 62 en suite rooms, restaurant, bar and conference facilities.
The Ghost
Despite its relatively short history the Learmonth has managed to obtain a resident ghost. The identity of the ghost is unknown. Was he or she once a hotel guest or member of staff? Or is it perhaps one of Edinburgh's many older ghostly residents who simply found the Learmonth a pleasant place to stay?
Whatever the ghost's identity it appears harmless, spending much of its time wandering the hotel corridors and whistling cheerfully to itself. Sometimes people who hear the whistling also feel a ghostly presence passing them in the corridor.
The Learmonth Hotel ghost also likes to play pranks on guests and staff alike. Doors have been known to open and close unexpectedly whilst electrical apparatus and lights are switched on and off when nobody is around. This would seem to class the ghost in the category of spirit known as a poltergeist. It's familiarity with modern electrical equipment suggests that it might be a relatively new addition to the Edinburgh's spectral ledger.
