An Introduction to
Parapsychology
Given the amount of strange stuff in Edinburgh its perhaps not surprising that the city houses one of the few scholarly research units dedicated to parapsychology and claims of psi power.

KPU

The Koestler Parapsychology Unit (KPU) was established in 1985 and is part of the psychology department of the University of Edinburgh. The unit is named after the late Arthur Koestler, a keen student of the trange, who left a bequest to found a Chair of Parapsychology.

The Unit's fields of interest include:

  • the possible existence of psychic ability
  • belief in the paranormal
  • the psychology of anomalous experiences
  • pseudo-psychic deception and self- deception
  • the social and historical relevance of parapsychology.
Current (July 2008) teaching staff at the KPU include Dr Caroline Watt and Dr Peter Lamont, both of whom have published extensively in the field of parapsychology.

The KPU plans to offer an online course in parapsychology, open to anyone with an interest in the subject. At the time of writing (July 2008) the course is not yet available however you can read more about it here.
